Kirsty Leigh Coventry Seward serves as a Zimbabwean swimmer who became a politician and sports administrator. 

When 2025 arrives she will assume the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as its tenth head becoming the first woman together with the first person from Africa to lead this organization. 

She took office as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth Sport Arts and Recreation in September 2018.

Kirsty Coventry Biography 

Her full name is Kirsty Leigh Coventry and she was born on September 16, 1983, in Harare, Zimbabwe. She is 41 years old as of 2024. During 1999 Kirsty enrolled at Dominican Convent High School within Harare Zimbabwe.  

The 17-year-old Kirsty secured first place in history as the initial Zimbabwean swimmer who advanced to the Olympic semifinals during the year 2000 before earning Zimbabwe's Sports Woman of the Year recognition. 

She arrived in the United States to compete as an athlete for Auburn University in Alabama. Only at the 2004 Athens Olympics did Kirsty Coventry lend her talents to win three medals, and she took home the gold from the 200-meter backstroke event.

She was born to Zimbabwean parents. Her father's name is Mr. Rob Coventry and her mother's name is Mrs. Lyn Coventry. The marriage between Kirsty Coventry and Tyrone Seward took place on August 10, 2013, after she put him in charge of her management in 2010. 

The parents welcomed their first baby in May 2019. 

Physical Appearance & Career Details

Kirsty is 1.76 meters (5 feet 9 inches) tall and weighs 64 kg (141 lbs). She is a swimmer who specializes in backstroke and individual medley. She was part of the Longhorn Aquatics Club and swam for Auburn University. 

Her coaches included Dean Price, Kim Brackin, and David Marsh. During her studies at Auburn University Kirsty Coventry led the Tigers to their victory in both the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Championships. 

At the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, she took two gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke events and added two silver medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley finals. 

During the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, Kirsty Coventry received two silver medals through her victories in the 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley. 

Kirsty Coventry took both gold and silver medals in Rome during the 2009 World Championship competition. 

In her fifth and last Olympic Games at Rio 2016, Kirsty achieved the same 6th place finish she had obtained in 2012 for the 200m backstroke event.

Political Journey Of Kirsty

On September 7, 2019, just before her 35th birthday, Kirsty was appointed as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts, and Recreation in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Cabinet. 

In September 2023, she was reappointed to the same role by the president. The International Olympic Committee will opt for Kirsty to become its tenth president when 2025 arrives. 

The upcoming presidency of Kirsty Coventry will mark history by making her the first woman alongside being the first African to assume this role.
